The village (el pueblo) Archez
Archez is a village in the province Málaga, in the south of Spain. Hidden at the foot of the mountains, one can find the smallest village of the Axarquia area. Archez has only 475 inhabitant, whom are known as Archeros. The village is part of the Mudéjar Route, one of the most scenic routes through the Axarquia area.
Mudéjar means: area recaptured by the Christians on the Moors. The Mudéjar style – a mixture of Moor and Spanish influences – can be seen in many monuments. Archez has a minaret dating back to the 13th century. The minaret can easily been seen from a distance as it is the only non-white building. The sight is 15 meters high and has been decorated on the inside with diamantes and ceramics.
The village Archez is described as “la Joya Merinita del siglo XII”, the Merinita Jewel of the 12th century. It is seen as one of the most beautiful villages of the area. The very narrow streets offer a multitude of building styles. Some of the houses still feature the authentic pointed roofs. The many streams that run through the village, provide the wells at these houses of water.
Archez has an Argentinian restaurant, a bar, and a small supermarket. In addition you will find numerous restaurants in the surrounding area, where you can enjoy a delicious meal. The picturesque whitewashed village Archez is situated at the foothills of the Sierra Almijara. The village is surrounded by lovely orchards with almond and olive trees. Vegetables and fruit are being grown in the valley where the small rivers run, creating a colourful sight.
You can take a beautiful walk past the river La Turvilla and enjoy the tranquillity and the breath-taking view. Almonds, olives and avocadoes are the main source of income for the villagers. In addition the produce wine. Often you can see the farmers with theirs mules going into the valley to collect the harvest.
Het pittoreske witgekalkte dorp Archez is gelegen aan de uitlopers van de Sierra Almijara. Het dorp is omgeven door prachtige boomgaarden met amandel- en olijfbomen. In het dal waar de riviertjes stromen wordt groente en fruit geteeld, wat een kleurrijk schouwspel oplevert.
Langs de rivier La Turvilla kunt u een mooie wandeling maken en genieten van de enorme rust en het adembenemend uitzicht. De belangrijkste bron van inkomsten voor de bewoners van het dorp is de teelt van o.a. olijven, amandelen en avocado’s. Daarnaast wordt er ook zelf wijn gemaakt. Tijdens wandelingen komt u regelmatig boeren tegen die met hun muildieren het dal inlopen om de oogst binnen te halen.
Autumn and spring are ideal seasons to visit with temperatures between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius during the day. Also in winter the temperature in this area is quite pleasant, as the sun shines 320 days a year on average. Therefor the Axarquia area in the south of Spain proudly presents itself with the slogan: “el major clima de Europa” – the best climate in Europe.
